Romans 13:1-4 "Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God; and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: For he is a minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid, for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is a minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon them that doeth evil."
I am stepping aside from "The Continual Burnt Offering" of Dr. Ironside and posting my thoughts in my "Timely Truth" blog this morning. I am saddened by the events that are taking place once again in our beloved country. I am not speaking about the radical Islamic terrorism but the response of the community and media to the police action in Charlotte NC. Once again we see the disturbing pictures and videos of US cities under siege by our own citizens. Violent protests, looting, destroying private and public property, police in riot gear, tear gas, and the national guard being called in to help with the violence. These are scenes we expect to see in third world countries, not the United States of America! What is happening? How did we get here? What can be done?
The verses cited above from Romans tells us that the problem is a lack of respect for authority, and when you have no respect for God's ordained authority, you have no respect for God. It should not surprise us that we are here today. Galatians 6:7 says "Be not deceived, God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap." God has been removed from the public school, the public square, the church, the home, and our government. Sadly we also see the break down of the family. No Dads in the home, children being raised by single moms or on the streets. This is what we have sown, this is what we are reaping, remember, "God is not mocked."
The Romans passage clearly says if you resist the authority (police), you will receive damnation, or you will reap what you sow. If a police officer says, "drop the gun, get on your knees, and put your hands in the air," and you don't, you are resisting authority. He doesn't bear the sword in vain. Also rushing to judgment before all the facts come in is wrong. Sadly most of this is being fueled by the media (social and news). Why are the police not treated with the same rights we are "INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY?" The police in Ferguson and Baltimore were all proven innocent in a court of law, but the cities were destroyed by the community that took matters into their own hands. If it is a unjustified shooting, let the guilty officer pay for his crime. If it is justifiable, the perpetrator sadly reaped what was sown. Beside this, what gives us the right to violently protest, loot, destroy private and public property even if they are unjustified shootings? This is why we have a court system.
At the root of what is being called a "racially charged problem" is a lack of respect for God's ordained authority. We are fast becoming a Godless society. We are reaping the wicked fruit of a country that has cast off God as seen in Psalm 2:1-3, "Why do the heathen rage and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us."
Remember Romans says, if you do good, you have nothing to fear from the authorities, but if you do evil, then fear.
We can debate this problem and try our best to find a solution forever, but the real root problem is the sin of rebellion and for this sin there is only One cure.
Sin is the problem and Christ is the only cure.
